30 Years of the Summer Law Internship Program ______________________________________________________________ The Atlanta Bar ' s Elevated and Admired Intern Program for High School Students .

O n Friday , July 22 , 2022 , the Atlanta Bar Association successfully concluded Year 30 of its Summer Law Internship Program ( SLIP ) for High School Students with its annual Intern Appreciation Breakfast at the State Bar of Georgia . Paula J . Frederick ( State Bar of Georgia ) and her colleagues graciously hosted the Intern Appreciation Breakfast for the 12th straight year . Terrence Lee Croft ( CroftADR / JAMS ), a co-founder of SLIP , and the 1993 President of the Atlanta Bar Association when SLIP was founded , gave a wonderful speech on “ What the Internship Program Has Meant to Me .” There was an excellent turnout with over 140 individuals present at the breakfast to support the 2022 interns .

SLIP 30 had 31 students from 28 schools this Summer for this 30th edition . After modified and / or virtual schedules for the last two summers due to COVID-19 , SLIP was back on track with its regular , eight week schedule this year . The 2022 SLIP Co- Chairs were Sarah A . Arnold ( Nelson Mullins ), with six years ; Natasha Silas ( National Criminal Defense College ), with 22 years ; former intern Darrius M . Woods ( Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation ), with four years ; former intern Kellyann M . Malone ( King & Spalding ), with five years , and S . Wade Malone ( Nelson Mullins ), with 30 years involved with SLIP .
In addition to the valuable work experience with their hosts , the 2022 interns completed the following :
• Eight sets of Enrichment ( called “ homework ”)
• 10 Progress Tests ( including two during first orientation )
• A 750-word essay on a 2021 U . S . Supreme Court decision as part of the annual Terrence Croft Essay Competition
• Delivered by memory the 30-line poem “ I Am the Lawyer .”
The goal was to continuously test the interns ’ mettle and have their abilities and confidence grow in the process . It is incredible to watch that evolution every year .

In the first 30 years of the Summer Law Internship Program , over 870 paid internships have been made available to Atlanta area high school students . SLIP has had 52 former Atlanta Bar Summer Law interns attend law school . This Fall , SLIP will have 21 former interns in law school from California to Massachusetts and many places in between ( with a heavy concentration of law students in Georgia law schools ), including seven first-year law students .
“ What To Expect in Your First Year of Law School -Taking Flight ”
In furtherance of the Atlanta Bar Association Summer Law Internship Program efforts to support its former interns , Wade Malone , and Kellyann Malone , who is a rising 2L , conducted a twoand-a-half-hour seminar on Saturday , July 23 , 2022 , on “ What to Expect in Your First Year of Law School - Taking Flight ” for five former Atlanta Bar Summer Law interns starting law school this fall . These interns are :
• Keni Anthony ( SLIP 2018 ) - Albany ( NY ) Law School
• Nicole Gipson ( SLIP 2016-2017 ) - Georgia State University , College of Law
