Precedents
Following on from the previous model where different
levels and spaces were created, I tested the idea of suspending
rooms or ‘pods’ within the building, similar to the
work of Will Alsop. This idea links well with my scheme as
having individual pods could create smaller workspaces
for the users.

However due to the nature of the external facade of the
Knight & Lee building, suspending rooms would lead to
structural problems. So moving forward with the design,
I have decided that using columns to support the new
�����������������������������������������������������������isting
structure of the building.

Netherlands Dance Theatre
Designed by Rem Koolhaus and completed in
1987, the dance theatre consisted of 3 levels:
the lowest slotted beneath the auditorium tiers,
above it a half-moon balcony, the highest - a
�����������������
I was drawn to the ‘half-moon balcony’ being supported
by coloured columns. The balcony allows
�������������������������������������������������
a greater sense of space within the building.

Suspended, brightly coloured pods.
Drawings and models experimenting with primary
shapes by dividing the interior into different
areas and levels within the existing exterior
structure. Using the primary forms in an abstract
way vertically and horizontally.
