Conceptual starting point Taking shapes and elements from my collage and transforming them into 3D designs and forms. Primary shapes = Initial building blocks of design Concept Design Precedent Froebel blocks Friedrich Froebel was an educator who created a series of educational activities centred around the idea that children learn by playing. Froebel went be given to children to explore and create and develop practical skills. He created a series of regular shaped blocks in a range of simple colours. Child’s Play by Daniel Buren - a space has been transformed into a play area and a real game of life-size buildings from geometrical shapes and colours inspired by Friedrich Froebel. Figure 12- Froebel blocks It is comprised of giant wooden cylinders, cubes and arches – half painted white, half in primary colours. LAY I particularly like the contrast between the bold colours and the white used by Daniel Buren and how the idea of using white as a ‘blank canvas’ within my scheme would allow the users to maximise their creativity. However the use of colour within the design, will act as inspiration. 8 9
