Inspired by the delicate grace of butterflies, Nanna Ditzel aimed to create furniture that embodied a sense of lightness and fluidity. Even 70 years later, the Ocean series is still characterised by its lightweight structure, repetitive slats and metal frames designed and tested for robust outdoor use. The collection is engineered for disassembly, enabling each component to be recycled in its purest form.
To celebrate the anniversary, the Ocean Collection has been photographed in Nanna Ditzel’ s former holiday home, which is now occupied by Nanna Ditzel’ s daughter, Vita and her husband Søren. The holiday home is located in Hornbæk, Denmark and was Nanna Ditzel’ s summertime sanctuary between 1963-1987. Nanna and Jørgen’ s influence is still present through furniture and artefacts handed down from the designer couple to their children.
Ketil Årdal, CEO of Mater, comments on the relationship with the Ditzel foundation saying,“ At Mater, our goal is to continue challenging traditional conventions of furniture production. Sustainable thinking is at the forefront of every decision we make, and we are constantly exploring innovative materials, transforming waste into beautiful, durable products. Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel’ s influence on Danish design is profound and we take immense pride in upholding their legacy through Ocean.”
