THE OCEAN COLLECTION BY MATER PAYS TRIBUTE TO 70 YEARS OF ENDURING DESIGN

Initially designed by Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel, the iconic outdoor collection still captivates with its timeless appeal— reimagined for today.
Mater, the pioneering Danish green-tech design brand, proudly celebrates the 70th anniversary of the 1955 design that inspired its Ocean Collection. Originally created by the renowned Danish designers Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel, Mater has thoughtfully reimagined the collection since 2019, blending heritage with innovation to tackle modern sustainability challenges. Mater breathes new life into this iconic series by transforming waste into durable, elegant furniture while remaining true to the Ditzels’ visionary approach to functional and enduring design.
Ocean was originally named Havestol by Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel, which translates from Danish to‘ garden chair.’ The series featured a frame made of red or black lacquered steel tubes, paired with a laminated beech seat and a choice of ash or teak veneer. Havestol was produced by Poul Kolds Savværk in Kerteminde, on the island of Funen, Denmark.
Today, Mater’ s iterations include‘ Black’ and‘ Sand’ colourways, made from upcycled fishing nets and ocean plastic waste. In contrast, a green colourway is produced from recycled medical plastic waste, such as discarded insulin pens. Advances in technology now allow the safe decontamination of medical plastics, enabling materials that were once destined for incineration to be repurposed. The latest edition in‘ Burnt Red’ incorporates postconsumer e-waste, addressing the growing global issue of e-waste consumption. Mater’ s Ocean collection, featuring chairs, benches and tables, aims to conserve natural resources and minimise pollution.
