Introduction
I have chosen to specialize in programming for games and App
development and am currently proficient in JavaScript and GameMaker
Language (GML code) as well as capable in C sharp. The game engines that I have
chosen to specialize in are Unity3D and GameMaker, as these will provide a
broad knowledge of game production at the start of my career. Unity3D is rather
new and is quickly becoming one of the most used engines in the independent
games industry and GameMaker is currently one of the best engines solely
dedicated to the 8-bit game medium. I also have excellent knowledge of Maya
and 3DXMax’s uses with Unity3D, such as importing textured characters/assets
and animation, as well as basic knowledge of the programs.
For this project I hope to be able to create a fun playable game in order to
display my coding skills. This will be a perfect way to try and enter the game
programming industry. With independent companies you have more
programming control in a smaller game (as opposed to a small coding role in a
large game in a larger company) and this will demonstrate that I am able to
script a complete game with a versatile platform character control system.
I have taken to scripting very well and am pleased to say that I have found
my niche. I am very mathematically minded and during the course I found I was
less well suited to 3D programs. I was forced to adapt and found that scripting
was a very valid option for me.
For my major project I aim to hone my Unity3D skills as well as to utilise
my coding knowledge in a creative way to produce a three-level and visually
pleasing game. This is the best way to demonstrate to the industry that I would
be an asset working for their company. It would illustrate my ability to lead and
work in a group and become a valued member of their team.
This game was originally based on concepts from the book “Kappa” by famed
Japanese author Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The book was a huge source of
inspirational material and our group’s concept artist was able to create beautiful
art reminiscent of the platform game “Rayman Origins”. (Ubisoft, R. 2014)
For my 30-second piece I want to create an 8-bit game created in
GameMaker. I have always been very passionate about 8-bit games which have
recently come back into popularity as art games because they allow for
beautiful retro pixel art game graphics. Pixel art is a unique art form that heralds
