LIVE

IN THE

MOMENT

The anticipation of attending a live event builds from the moment the order confirmation pops up on your screen. Most of you reading this, at some point in your life, have eagerly awaited tickets to go on sale for a show, tour or gig that you simply cannot miss.
The thing I find confusing is a few of us, in fact in the spirit of honesty, the large majority of us, go through all of this to film the event on our phones, rather than being fully present in the moment before us. In a time where everyone has a camera on their phone, fans seem more tempted to film the event rather than experience it.
We thrive off of the electricity in the air as we take our seat or in some cases find our spot in a muddy field. The excitement builds inside you and the fellow fans you befriend to discuss your favourite songs or jokes. You each take turns to do impressions and discuss details about the performance. We even book tickets, sometimes a year in advance, wait in line, in all weathers for hours to experience these times. We spend on concessions and souvenirs, buying items just because they are associated with the event in which we are attending. Yet, once the show starts out come the phones. A glittering sea of camera lights twinkle throughout the audience to record the appearance. Just last year Beyoncé stopped a show to tell one fan to put the camera phone away saying: " you got to seize this moment baby, I ' m right in front of your face!"
Think about what we are really missing out on. Photos and videos shared on social media are great but what about creating personal memories that are just for you, the moments you may have while focusing on the performance. I myself have made eye contact with performers and those are cherished times no matter how brief.
A lot of work goes into events and shows, perhaps as fans we should respect the performers and give them our full attention? Something to think about.
