Williams' father was a jazz perccusionist growing up. This being said he grew up in a very musical family. Before spending 3 years playing in the U.S. Air Force band, he studied at UCLA. When he returned from the Air Force he moved to New York to study at Julliard. After studying at Julliard for a few years he moved to L.A. where he composed TV shows for a while, one being Gilligans Island. One of the most extraordinary partnerships for Williams is with Steven Spielberg. Spielberg asked him to join him in 1974 and Williams has composed many movies for Speilberg since. U.S. President Barack Obama presented the 2009 National Medal of Arts to John Williams on 25 February 2010, in the East Room of the White House in Washington. Williams likes to look at composing from an artistic standpoint, "writing a tune is like sculpting," Williams once said. "You get four or five notes, you take one out and move one around, and you do a bit more and eventually, as the sculptor says, "'in that rock there is a statue, we have to go find it.'"
