This topic is one of the most important in US History, this war drew a path into the future of the US.
This event is also known as the “War Between the States”.
The country separated in two sides.
The North versus South, the northern and southern of the US started to split by the 19th century, the main cause of this unexpected split was the slavery.
The Confederacy (South), was also referred as the Confederate States of America. It was an unrecognized country in North America (1861-1865). This side was form by 7 slave-holding states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas).
On this side, the economy was dependent on the agriculture, cotton and plantation. They forced the African Americans to realize this types of activities.
The Union (North), which was referred as the United States of America and was govern by a national government, the president of this side was Abraham Lincoln. On this side, they count with 20 free states, 4 border states that supported it.
This side was starting to revolutionize on the industrial part, mainly the exportation of steel. Their economy was highly dependent on their industrial activities.
On April 10, 1861, the War between states just started. On April 12, the confederates open fire to one of the Union’s army, forcing them to surrender.
On July 21, 1861, the Union Army under Gen. Irvin McDowell suffers a defeat at Bull Run 25 miles southwest of Washington. Confederate Gen. Thomas J. Jackson earns the nickname "Stonewall," as his brigade resists Union attacks. Union troops fall back to Washington. President Lincoln realizes the war will last long as he first expected.
