GOLD

RUSH

OUR FEATURE INTERVIEW WITH

DAVE TURIN

In December of 2010, while watching television, I started noticing a lot of commercials for a show about gold mining. I can’t remember the commercials exactly, but they must have been quite good because it had my interest. I was going to watch. So I did. I watched the first episode and became hooked. Friday nights with a bottle of ice-cold Coke and a box of Whoppers was my ritual and what I most looked forward to during the week. You see, this show was not just about mining gold. It was so much more. It was a human-interest story that followed a small group of men who had left their homes and families to venture to Alaska at the prospect of a life-altering gold strike that could change their fortunes. At the helm of the show are the Hoffmans-Todd and his dad Jack. They assembled a team of friends to set out on this adventure together. This team was a group of down-on-their-luck guys who just wanted to support their families. Life had handed them a raw deal and this was their chance at redemption. I, too, had been handed a raw deal when I lost my job upon my return from a year-long deployment to Baghdad as part of the Army Reserves. So their plight immediately resonated with me. That first season of Gold Rush was brutal. They barely got any gold out of the ground, but a hit television show was born and an advisor to the Hoffman crew that first season, Dave Turin, decided to become a full-time part of the crew the next year. For Dave and the crew there have been many ups and downs through the years of filming, but God

has allowed much success-success that Dave immediately attributes to God. Out of all the things I love and have loved about Gold Rush is that they prayed. They pray together. They thank God and praise Him when things are going well. And when not.

Dave Turin is a family man. Married to his high-school sweetheart Shelly, they spend most of their time together. When they can. He brings a level of expertise, practicality, experience, and leadership to the crews with whom he works so hard. I wanted to get an idea about how he balances his life with all he faces on a day-to-basis. How does he do it? If you have not watched the show you haven’t seen the spiritual leadership Dave imparts. He has great faith and shares it on a regular basis. He lives it on the show. This is our interview with Dave Turin-star of Discovery Channel’s hit show Gold Rush. (Season 7 premieres Friday, October 14 at 9pm EST)
