Test Title April 2014 | Page 9

Southern European and Latin American women spend a great deal of time on housework. Along the Mediterranean, a strong family culture persists with little government intervention. Spain, for instance, which places a greater importance on informal childcare, with the grandparents living with both their children and grandchildren, conveys this philosophy. Both parents work while the grandparents often look after the grandchildren.

Family culture persists in countries like Mexico as well, where women spend a 100 minutes more a day than the average of the 28 countries surveyed. However, Mexican men spend over two hours more a day on paid work than the other men, creating a large division of labor between the sexes regarding paid and unpaid labor. However, religion may influence the disparity. Latin American countries, like Mexico and Brazil, exhibit very high rates of female dominated housework, especially compared to the less religious Nordic countries.
