Participants in 28 countries kept a twenty four hour diary for one day. Most of the countries fall under the category of industrial or post-industrial, and some are considered emerging industrial economies such as India. The participants ranged in age from 15-64 and the information collected spanned from 1999 to 2011.
After analyzing all 28 countries, women do, on average, 2.6 hours of housework more per week than men. Childcare is still dominated by women, spending more than twice as much time as men. Mothers spend a majority of that time in tending to the physical needs of the children. Fathers, on the other hand, devoted more of their time with their children in recreational and educational activities, like helping with homework or playing games. And, even with non-working fathers, the majority of childcare was accomplished by working mothers. Not only was childcare still dominated by women in all countries, cooking was as well.
