M-commerce To Constitute More Than 25 % Of E-commerce Traffic

Modern day social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter help to stay more connected, hence two out of three internet users in India access social media websites every day. In order to reach the niche audience, recruit people and organize mass protests, social media has turned out to be a trend-setter for organizations, brands and recruiters, as per ET reports. According to a study by research firm IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India, around 60percent of Social media access happens from small towns. The infographic image released as part of the study reveals that out of the 111 million Internet users in the country, the active Internet users consist of 89 million and the total social media users are 66 million. In terms of mobile Internet, the active mobile internet user base in India is of 39.7 million and the active social media user base is 32.5 million. Besides, it also reveals the leading social websites in the country where Facebook tops the list by 97percent, followed by Google + of 34 percent, LinkedIn 17percent, Twitter 17percent, Orkut 14percent and finally Ibibo 6percent. As per the estimated figures of users in India, Facebook has an access of 65 million, LinkedIn of 18 million and Twitter of 16 million and in terms of activities used on social sites, using apps ranks the most with 73percent than accessing groups with 47percent.

E-retailing firm HomeShop18 pegs mobile commerce to contribute more than 25 per cent of the total traffic in e-commerce( online shopping) by 2015. " In the next three years mobile commerce will constitute more than 25 per cent of the total traffic in e-retailing," HomeShop18 CEO and founder Sundeep Malhotra said. Elaborating his statement, he added India has about 800 million mobile connections and is growing at 25 per cent year-on-year( y-o-y). " It is the second most mobile-populated country globally. I understand there are about some 60-70 million smartphones and they are growing at around 150 per cent y-o-y and why because their prices have come down," Malhotra noted. According to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India( IAMAI) and IMRB, India is expected to have close to 165 million mobile Internet users by March 2014, up from 87.1 million in December 2012 as more people are accessing the web through mobile devices and dongles. Besides, independent experts pegged e-commerce segment to have doubled to about USD 14 billion in 2012 from USD 6.3 billion in 2011, fuelling more investments from e-commerce firms to step up their presence in this segment. Experts estimate that e-commerce companies in India raised over USD 500 million( about ` 2,743.3 crore) in 2012.
