A recent study involving the voluntary ingestion of soft plastic fishing lures on brook trout found that discarded fishing lures could be having a detrimental affect on wild trout. During the study, brook trout were fed a diet mixed with a free-choice assortment of soft plastic lures. About 65% of the fish voluntarily chose to eat the fishing lures, both from the surface of the water as well as from the bottom of the tank. Once ingested, plastic lures are likely to stay in the fish's stomach for the rest of their life which causes health problems such as weight loss, decrease in body condition, anorexic behaviours and ulcers. In Maine, fisheries biologists are reporting an increase in the number of angled trout and salmon with soft plastic lures found in their stomachs. For this reason, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is strongly encouraging anglers to change from using the soft plastic lures to using biodegradable lures to help protect the fish. Some estimates indicate that there are as much as 20 million pounds of soft plastic lures being lost in U.S. freshwater lakes and streams each year. The life expectancy of a soft plastic lure is over 200 years. A variety of companies are now offering biodegradable tackle and other environmentally-friendly fishing products. Biodegradable Fishing Line? B ioline is America's first biodegradable fishing line. Bioline biofilament™ retains 100% of its tensile strength for 10 to 12 months on a reel and biodegrades to minimal carbon dioxide and water in a period of approximately five years with exposure to naturally occurring elements. Traditional nylon monofilaments remain in the environment for about 600 years, and some lines last forever. Bioline's handling is so similar to nylon monofilament that the line does not require anglers to alter how they fish. The inherent advantages of Bioline's chemistry are not limited to being biodegradable. Unlike nylon monofilament, Bioline does not absorb water. Its strength and stretch does not change. Bioline provides excellent knot strength and is highly UV and abrasion resistant. With low-memory and a silky smooth exterior, Bioline is an exceptional casting line on both spinning and casting reels alike. Clear in colour, Bioline provides stealth in fresh and saltwater applications. If kept sealed in its original package, Bioline has a five-year shelf life. Once spooled on a reel, Bioline
