The drawbridge, the defence tower,
the oblique position of the entry gate
making it even more problematic for
enemies to enter; each tiny detail was
studied to protect the lords and their
secrets. This example of mastery in
defensive strategy has been preserved
over the centuries and stands today to
show us that wars were a common occurrence in those times.
Even today, reaching Rocca di Varano is no easy
feat but what you’ll find at the end of the journey
will be worth the effort! You can arrive by foot but
the road will be cluttered with many other discoveries that will make the trip very tiring. Before
arriving at the Da Varano residence, you will cross
a small hamlet that has remained unchanged
throughout the centuries. There are some buildings here that date back to the 1300s! The main
attraction is the church of Sant’Antonio with its
foundations directly on the rock.
For those who are curious to see the inside of Rocca di Varano, the castle is open from 27th July to
31st October – have fun discovering!
