VARANO Dominating from a precarious position When we think about force, we imagine something stable, able to resist any sort of threat. It would be hard to think of two concepts such as‘hanging in a precarious position’and‘dominating’ could go together yet the Castle of Varano situated close to Camerino, does just that. Occupying a precarious position on top of a hill, when seen from far, you have the impression that it could almost topple of the hill at any moment – even though it’s been sitting there for centuries. This building was the fortress that was able to resist attacks from enemies and gave the lords of the manor that built it an imposing force. The castle was built in the 12th century and, as can easily be understood from the name, was the residence of the Da Varano family. From here, they dominated the valley of Chienti and could see to the horizon, scrutinising what was going on for kilometres. VA RA NO CA 64 / WHY MARCHE - LAND OF MARCHE ST LE
