URBAN
DESIGN
As we progress in the vertical studios of design, it becomes more important to have a deep understanding. A
deep understanding of not only “ typical circulations and design elements” but also the “actual psychological
needs of the user” keeping in mind his nature. Urban design according to us is all about the symbiotic
relationships between “WE” as people and the so called “Spaces”.
7th semester gave us a small jest about urban planning and its requirement in the parallel world of
architecture. In order to understand what exactly URBAN DESIGN or URBANISM is, a visit to such a core city
space was necessary. WE Chose Indore!
The initial studies showed that planning a place also meant- understanding the social impact of a change,
understanding the moral fibers of a place, of a chowk, of a lane, of a street…the smell. That is how Ar. Raj
Waswani appalled the subject to us!
The purpose of the visit to the old city Indore was to understand the interfaces, the densities, the activity
relations, the open spaces that held them together and the architectural impact of all these paraphernalia.
