Joan Millman—Scholar in Residence
Continuing her support for the community and her relationship with St. Francis
College, former New York State Assemblywoman Joan Millman became the
College’s newest Scholar-in-Residence and hosted three panel discussions
last spring.
For Women’s History Month, Millman welcomed New York State Assemblywoman
Jo Anne Simon and New York State Senator Roxanne Persaud, a former Registrar
at St. Francis. They discussed the unique challenges that women in government
face. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, United States Congresswoman for New York 7th
District, spoke at the second event on how being the first Puerto Rican woman
elected to the U.S. House of Representatives affects the way she serves her
constituents, while Dr. Joan Pastore of the AMICO Senior Center and Judy Willig
of Heights and Hills spoke about “Aging in an Urban Environment.” ●

documentary film, Defiant Requiem,
about Jewish prisoners at the Terezín concentration camp who performed the
Verdi Requiem as an act of survival and defiance against their Nazi captors.
Mr. Terna saw one of the performances as a prisoner at Terezín and says that
decades later the Holocaust still informs all of his paintings. “The Shoah is like
a crazy bass playing in my head all the time. And I learned to play the fiddle
above it so there should be some harmony to my life.” ●
