Jerry Newsom
• Leading scorer for three years at Indiana State University 1965 through 1968
• Led team to runner-up in 1968 NCAA Division II tournament and named MVP of the tournament
• Inducted into Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and Indiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame
• Drafted 74th overall by Boston Celtics in 1968 NBA draft and was drafted by the Indiana Pacers of the ABA
Greg Oden
• Moved to Terre Haute in 1997 and played basketball at Sarah Scott Middle School before moving to Indianapolis , leading Lawrence North High School to three consecutive IHSAA titles 2004 through 2006
• Named Indiana Mr . Basketball in 2006
• Went to Ohio State and led basketball team to NCAA championship game
• Drafted with the first pick of the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trailblazers
Jerry Sturm
• All-around athlete at Gerstmeyer High School in football , basketball and track
• After playing football for one year at University of Illinois , played 15 years of professional football in the Canadian Football League , the American Football League and the National Football League
• Was an American Football League All-Star in 1964 and 1966
Bud Taylor
• Boxer known as the “ Blonde Terror of Terre Haute ” held the National Boxing Association World Bantamweight Championship in 1927
• Inducted into the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame in 1986 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005
• Attended Indiana State University where he was a five time-NCAA champion in men ’ s gymnastics and led the men ’ s gymnastics team to the
1977 NCAA national championship
• Was named to the 1976 men ’ s Olympic gymnastics team
• Won the 1979 Nissen Award and the 1979 James E . Sullivan Award after winning six medals at the World Championships
• Inducted into the Indiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2010
Dizzy Trout
Kurt Thomas
• Signed contract with Terre Haute Tots and compiled a 30-8 record after 38 appearances for Terre Haute in the Three-I League
• Played next three years ( 1936-1938 ) in Indianapolis , Toledo and in Beaumont and went 22-6 with a 2.12 ERA
• Made his major league debut with Detroit Tigers in 1939 and ended his career with a record of 170-161 with a 3.23 ERA and 1,256 strikeouts with the Tigers , Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles
• Inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981
Steve Weatherford
• Native of Terre Haute and was outstanding athlete in track , soccer , football and basketball at Terre Haute North High School
• Attended University of Illinois on a football scholarship as a punter breaking Dike Edelman ’ s school record of 43 yards per punt with an average of 44.5 yards per punt in 2003
• Also competed in track and field in the long jump , high jump , 60m hurdles , shot put and heptathlon
• Signed with New Orleans Saints as undrafted free agent in 2006 and played for the Saints , Kansas City Chiefs , Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets before signing with the New York Giants in 2011
• Played in Super Bowl XLVI with the Giants when they defeated the New England Patriots and averaged 40.8 yards per punt
Anthony Thompson
• Was a Parade All-American and All-State running back at Terre Haute North High School
• Attended Indiana University winning the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award in 1989 and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting
• Was selected by the Phoenix Cardinals in the second round of the 1990 NFL draft and played in 37 games with the Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams , scoring six touchdowns
John Wooden
• Resided in Terre Haute from 1946 through 1948 and was the athletic director and head basketball coach at Indiana State Teachers College ( Indiana State University )
• In 1948 Wooden led the Sycamores to the conference title and coached them to the NAIB National Tournament final losing to Louisville , the only championship game a Wooden-coached team every lost
• Went to UCLA in the 1948-49 season and won 10 NCAA Championships during his tenure and is considered the greatest coach in the history of college basketball
