AA successful steel firm says it ’ s keen to bring more local young people into the engineering world .

Paralloy Group employs more than 1,000 people across Europe – including 470 here on Teesside .

Paralloy designs and produces specialist stainless steel products and materials at sites in Middlesbrough and Billingham and was recognised this year when it received the prestigious King ’ s Award for Enterprise for Excellence in International Trade

Those products are used by all kinds of sectors , including petrochemicals , aerospace , nuclear and defence .
Paralloy operates in more than 45 countries globally , with a turnover – the amount of money it brings in each year – currently exceeding £ 200 million per year .
And apprenticeships are keenly encouraged to bring local young people into the engineering world .

HR manager Ian Grimes said : “ As of today , we have 20 apprentices aged 17 to 20 . But we ’ ll look to increase those numbers , because we see it as a way to provide opportunities to young people and combat growing skills shortages in the industry .”
Currently , only 12 per cent of the UK ’ s engineering workforce are women .
But Paralloy is keen to change that , with three females among its apprentices and , hopefully , more to follow .
Paralloy is always looking to develop and improve its current practices . It has recently been working with Next Gen Makers , a company that liaises with students , education providers and private businesses to develop and deliver an improved standard of apprenticeship service to the learners .
But what ’ s it like to work at Paralloy ? We asked four apprentices about their roles …
