Tees region gets set to be part of
North-East’s biggest sporting weekend
A
ll eyes will be on Tees Valley this
summer as the region gets set
to host a raft of exciting events
including action-packed sporting event,
the Great North CityGames, which come
to Stockton-on-Tees for the first time in
September.
The Great North CityGames, normally
held in NewcastleGateshead, is staged the
day before the Simplyhealth Great North
Run and is an established highlight in an
action packed sporting weekend.
On Saturday September 7, thousands will
enjoy this incredible spectacle in the heart
of Stockton town centre. The high street will
be transformed to host world-class athletes
taking part in contests and events held
throughout the day. Free entry is available
to all spectators, as they watch top-class
sportsmen and women from all over the
world compete alongside North-East talent.
Last year’s games attracted several big-
name athletes, including Scottish distance
runner Laura Muir, then newly-named the
2018 European Champion, who battled
against rival Eilish McColgan over the mile.
Those that want to be a part of the
action can get involved by signing up for
the Simplyhealth Great Tees 10k (www.
greatrun.org/great-tees-10k) or
give the little ones a go with the
Simplyhealth Great Tees Junior
and Mini Runs (www.greatrun.
org/great-tees-10k/junior-and-
mini-great-tees-run). Both take
place ahead of the Great North
CityGames on Saturday September 7. Entries

The Great North CityGames is just one of
the major events happening in the area this
summer as Middlesbrough welcomes BBC
Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May, the Take That
Greatest Hits concert comes to the Riverside
Stadium in June and the Darlington Arena
hosts Jess Glynne in August.
Stockton high street will be transformed
throughout the summer to stage the world
renowned Stockton International Riverside
Festival (August), live music and comedy
at Stockton Stages (June) and sporting
challenges such as the Cycling festival (July).
