Padel power
comes to
Teesside
Impressive - Tennis World has enjoyed
a £400,000 renovation.
Floodlit - the new padel courts at
Tennis World Middlesbrough.
T
eessiders have been invited to
try out padel tennis – the world’s
fastest-growing racquet sport –
after Tennis World Middlesbrough
installed two first class courts as part of an
impressive overall £400,000 renovation,
including tennis courts and clubhouse
facilities.
Exciting racquet sport padel is already
hugely popular in Spain, Argentina and
elsewhere but is now spreading rapidly
across the UK as well as the USA and other
parts of mainland Europe.
Tennis World offer the only covered,
floodlit padel courts between Edinburgh
to the north and Manchester to the west to
Huddersfield to the south.
Tennis World members and non-members
alike have joined the rush to try out a sport
that many Brits first tasted while enjoying
holidays on Spain’s Costa del Sol and the
Algarve in Portugal.
Invented in Mexico nearly 50 years ago,
padel is typically played in doubles on an
enclosed court about the third the size of a
tennis court. Scoring is the same as normal
tennis and the balls used are similar but with
less pressure.
The main difference about padel is that
balls can be played off the court’s walls in
a similar way to the game of squash, while
players use solid, stringless rackets. The ball
must be no higher than waist height when
being served.
Tennis World head coach and director of
operations Nigel Garton said: “Our recent
investments mean we can now provide
Teesside and the wider region with high-
quality tennis facilities whilst being the
first club in the North-East to launch padel,
which is an exciting, truly accessible sport.”
