JUST THE JOB 2 RMS celebrates two decades of success 020 marks a very special year in the history of RMS as the firm celebrates its 20th anniversary. Over the past 20 years the industry has undergone many changes. Candidate and client needs have changed and legislation and technology has evolved, while new innovations continue to emerge. However, one thing remains constant – the people. This year is not just a celebration of RMS’s history, it’s a celebration of the people who made this happen – clients, partners and employees. Carole Martin established Resource Management Solutions (NE) Limited (RMS) in 2000. With a £12,000 overdraft and no trading experience within the recruitment sector, she set about her work from an office in Middlesbrough. Her motivation was a passion for people and a desire to treat everyone fairly. RMS initially supplied temporary labour and although just a team of two, the team began to establish an encouraging reputation. It was a demanding time and Carole needed determination to succeed. With a mindset that RMS would fill every job, she ensured she practiced what she preached and clients would often see her “This year is not just a celebration of RMS’s history, it’s a celebration of the people who made this happen.” reporting for duty alongside other family members to ensure she kept her promise. And that’s been the ethos of the company ever since. After relocating to Darlington in 2003, the growing team secured numerous contracts and their client base grew organically. In 2004, after being awarded a large contract with a well- respected automotive and logistics client, RMS opened its second Teesside office. The company opened its third office in Southampton during 2007, more than 300 miles away from its stomping ground, presenting an additional challenge to establish the company as a creditable player in the southern labour market. Unfortunately, 2008’s global financial crisis followed, triggering a sharp rise in unemployment. It was a testing time for RMS, but one that has shaped the business into what it is today. Needing to redefine its business model and strategies to survive this turbulent time, the RMS team worked hard to secure new business. Once the labour market was in recovery, RMS streamlined its business. Its objective was to be recognised as the employment business of choice, complementing the entire employee lifecycle, while continuing to put people at the centre. Employing payroll and HR professionals to work alongside its recruiters, RMS created a unique service model, providing clients with a full turnkey solution. The model proved so successful that it opened three additional offices and in 2015 RMS reinvested profits and acquired its own premises. During 2015 and 2016 the company was recognised as one of the Fastest 50 growing North-East businesses, which was followed by a Best HR & Recruitment Specialist award in 2017. Today, RMS operates on a national basis, with eight offices across the UK. It employs more than 35 trained recruitment and CIPD HR professionals whose skills include first aid and counselling. With an average of ten years’ service, the company recognises its success is equally attributable to the investment made by its employees and partners. Celebrating 20 years as a trusted and expert recruitment and HR service for the Tees region. 58 | Tees Business
