Latos CEO Peter Wilcock has been characteristically direct about the stakes. Speaking about the UK’ s opportunity to become what he calls an AI“ epicentre”, Peter has argued that the country cannot afford to sit back while decisions about its digital future are made elsewhere. With roughly 20 neural edge sites planned across the UK by 2030, including earlystage proposals for cities such as Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, this is a national infrastructure strategy that happens to be starting in the North-East. That sequencing is itself a statement. At a moment when some of the world’ s largest technology companies are committing billions to UK data infrastructure, Britain is also proving it can build sovereign, homegrown capacity of its own.
Stockton-on-Tees has reinvented itself before, from the birthplace of the modern railway to a hub of chemical and process engineering. The arrival of Latos’ s neural edge facility gives the town, the wider region and the country a new claim to make: that the next great British industry— sovereign artificial intelligence— can be built, staffed and governed right here.
