Why Stockton is where sovereignty meets growth
A £ 100m neural edge data centre rising on Preston Farm Industrial Estate is about to make Stockton-on-Tees the proving ground for a new kind of British infrastructure— one built not just to store data, but to keep control of it. For local councils, Whitehall departments and businesses of every size, that is a very big deal indeed.
The new currency: control, not just compute For a decade, the story of digital Britain has been written mostly from elsewhere. Our data has traversed the Atlantic, our cloud bills have been paid to hyperscalers headquartered thousands of miles away, and our most sensitive public and commercial information has often lived under the jurisdiction of foreign law rather than our own. Data sovereignty is the quiet insistence that this need not be the default. It is the principle that the data generated by British citizens, British hospitals and British businesses should be capable of being stored, processed and governed right here, under UK law, on UK soil.
That principle is no longer theoretical. It is being physically constructed on a 1,750 sq m site in Stockton-on-Tees.
Latos CEO Peter Wilcock has been direct about the stakes involved with the new data centre on Teesside.
Neural edge, built for the North-East Latos, the UK data centre company behind the scheme, calls its approach“ neural edge”— a deliberate departure from the vast, power-hungry warehouses that define conventional cloud computing. Where a typical hyperscale campus might demand 300 or 500 megawatts of power, Latos’ s Stockton facility is designed to run on a fraction of that, housing the latest Nvidia Blackwell GPUs across two purpose-built data halls. Construction is underway at Preston Farm Industrial Estate, with operations due to begin in 2027 as the first site in a planned network of around 20 being developed across the country by 2030.
