ACCOUNTING
Advocate- Director Don, centre, is delighted to see Baines Jewitt staff progressing from within.
We strongly believe in recruiting and nurturing local talent. her chosen career, Naomi has already completed a Level 3 AAT qualification and is progressing with her Level 4 AAT qualification, which will provide her with a platform to go on to study to be a chartered accountant if she chooses.
Progression from within Baines Jewitt also believes in rewarding dedication and promoting from within the company.
For example, Grace Stobbs, from Ingleby Barwick, joined Baines Jewitt in 2017 directly from Durham University, where she graduated in accounting and finance. Keen to stay in the local area within a professional firm, Grace was impressed by Baines Jewitt’ s investment in the ongoing skills and qualifications of its employees.
Grace completed a three-year professional training programme in 2020 to become an associate chartered accountant with the ICAEW. She has also recently gained promotion to the position of associate director within Baines Jewitt.
Another such example is Jemma Hoggard, from Darlington, who started out at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College. Following on from college, Jemma initially trained with a top 15 international accountancy firm where she achieved an AAT qualification in 2006 and qualified as a chartered accountant with the ICAEW in 2009. Jemma joined Baines Jewitt in
2015, where she was awarded an ICAEW Certificate of Fellowship in 2019.
Initially employed as an audit manager, and becoming a registered senior statutory auditor in 2023, Jemma has recently been promoted to the role of associate director where she will continue to work closely with small, medium and large businesses, plus groups, to oversee and approve annual audits.
Fully funded training“ These examples highlight just a handful of Baines Jewitt employees who have benefitted from fully funded professional training programmes,” explains Baines Jewitt director Don Adams.
Having joined the firm – then known as Jewitt, Sparrow and Swinbank- in 1989 as a trainee chartered accountant himself, Don was initially employed on a fouryear training contract. He therefore fully understands the importance of making the most of career opportunities and progression from within.
Having qualified as a chartered accountant in 1993, Don was made a partner at Jewitts in 2002 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 2003.
“ We strongly believe in recruiting and nurturing local talent. Investing in the continuing development of our employees provides a cost-effective solution to recruiting and upskilling staff to build a successful team,” says Don.
“ In return, employees commit to studying outside of work but are rewarded with a competitive salary and supportive training culture, which includes paid study leave and good routes for career progression.”
Business benefits“ Overall, it is a win-win situation for us all,” adds Don.“ As well as creating the leaders and managers of the future, the business benefits of investing in our people include effective succession planning, a more skilled and motivated workforce, improved client satisfaction, increased productivity and greater profitability.”
As a well-established chartered accountancy firm, Baines Jewitt is qualified to help ambitious businesses with effective planning, tax and financial advice, so they can make informed decisions. If you’ d like to discuss the next steps, please get in touch.
