THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS

How Discovery Special Academy ’ s secondary extension can inspire further collaborations between education and business

The addition of a secondary facility at a special academy in Middlesbrough has marked a “ significant milestone ” in providing high-quality education and therapeutic support for students with complex needs .

That ’ s the belief of the senior leadership at Tees Valley Education Trust , which now runs Discovery Special Academy ’ s 70-place secondary extension on Sandy Flatts Lane , alongside the former site of Nature ’ s World .
They believe the extension is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships between businesses , local authorities and specialist providers .
A circa £ 17m project , Discovery Special Academy serves 170 children , aged three to 16 , with complex needs .
Collaborations with Portakabin , Consortium Procurement Construction ( CPC ), Middlesbrough Council , the Department for Education and other stakeholders played a crucial role in delivering a state-of-the-art facility that meets the growing demands of the academy community .
Jennifer Duncan , deputy CEO of TVEd and executive head teacher for Discovery Special Academy , believes the expansion ’ s success highlights the importance of sharing its journey .
Jennifer said : “ By showcasing the need and impact of such partnerships , we can inspire further collaborations that support education and inclusion .”
She credited Middlesbrough Council for being “ instrumental ” in supporting the development , ensuring students with complex needs have access to essential resources and infrastructure .
“ The council ’ s commitment to inclusive education and collaboration in planning and

One of the project ’ s key partners , Portakabin , brought invaluable expertise in modern methods of construction ( MMC ), with Jennifer commenting : “ Portakabin ’ s ability to design and deliver a bespoke , high-quality building within tight timescales ensured that our vision became a reality .
“ They helped us navigate a new world of MMC , designing and delivering a high-quality building that meets our academic and therapeutic needs . Their professionalism and commitment ensured the project stayed on track , and we are thrilled with the outcome . Students will thrive in this innovative space , and the wider community will benefit from greater inclusivity .”
Similarly , CPC played a pivotal role in ensuring seamless procurement and project delivery . Their framework enabled efficient access to innovative MMC solutions , streamlining the process from concept to completion .
“ CPC ’ s framework allowed us to deliver a specialist secondary provision on time and within budget ,” said Jennifer . “ Their technical support and streamlined process were invaluable in achieving our vision . Their commitment to meeting our unique requirements has made them a trusted partner .”
TVEd leadership believes the expansion shows how businesses can shape inclusive education .
“ Moving forward , we must continue strengthening relationships with businesses to create sustainable pathways for students ,” said TVEd CEO Katrina Morley OBE . “ By working together , we can ensure that young people with SEND have access to the same opportunities as their peers , including internships , apprenticeships and employment prospects .
“ Companies investing in these collaborations contribute to social impact while benefitting from a diverse and skilled workforce . Business leaders can influence and inspire change by supporting accessible education , workplace training and mentorship initiatives .”
She believes continued industry engagement will help bridge the gap between education and employment , allowing students to transition seamlessly into their futures .
“ As our students progress towards post- 16 education pathways , we must explore opportunities that support their long-term success ,” she added . “ Expanding supported internships and employment partnerships will be essential .
“ The only way to make this a reality is through further collaboration and philanthropic support . By working together , we can provide students with the education , training and employment opportunities they need to thrive .
“ We welcome philanthropic discussions around supporting potential college opportunities , ensuring that students have continued access to high-quality education and career pathways . Investing in these initiatives will foster a truly inclusive workforce and society .”
As Discovery Special Academy moves forward , senior staff remain committed to advocating strategic partnerships that support students ’ growth , from early education to meaningful employment .
“ The success of this secondary extension is just the beginning ,” added Jennifer . “ With continued collaboration , we can achieve even greater impact in the years to come .”
