Tees steel firm supplies furnaces for pioneering ‘ green ’ project

Work carried out on Teesside by a steel specialist is playing a pivotal role in a new “ green ” project in Belgium .

Paralloy Group – a leading supplier of critical infrastructure to the global petrochemical industry – is providing major components for the construction of a groundbreaking ethylene facility .
In partnership with Technip Netherlands BV , INEOS Project ONE is currently under construction in the port of Antwerp .
On completion of commissioning , it will provide the chemical sector with Europe ’ s most high-tech and sustainable steam “ cracker ” that converts ethane into ethylene .
The project , designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices in the chemical industry , has garnered global attention and is set to redefine standards in ethylene production .

Ethylene is one of the most widelyused basic chemicals in the global chemical industry . Its uses include medical applications , lightweight car and wind turbine components , durable water and gas pipes , packaging to preserve food longer , smartphones and textiles with technical properties .
As part of the initiative , Paralloy has used advanced materials technologies and manufacturing processes at its Billingham facility to build and supply the major components for Project ONE ’ s state-of-theart furnaces .
With more than 500 tonnes of material cast in Billingham and more than 5,000 tubes manufactured and fabricated at its new TeesAMP facility in Middlesbrough by its skilled team of expert welders and engineers , Paralloy has accomplished a significant landmark for British manufacturing .
The furnaces are engineered to operate at optimal performance levels , ensuring maximum output while adhering to stringent sustainability requirements .
And in doing so , they will enhance energy efficiency and minimise environmental impact on the INEOS Project ONE scheme .
Paralloy HR manager Ian Grimes said : “ Our partnership in this world-leading project reflects our commitment to supporting environmentally responsible practices in the manufacturing sector . “ We are excited to contribute our expertise in material science and fabrication to help facilitate the global petrochemical industry transition to greener alternatives in ethylene production .”
Paralloy Group employs more than 1,000 people across Europe , including around 600 at its UK sites , including Billingham and Middlesbrough .
It invents and manufactures specialist stainless steel products for various sectors , including petrochemicals , aerospace , industrial turbines , nuclear , energy and defence .
The new INEOS Project ONE facility is anticipated to set a benchmark for the ethylene industry by employing cuttingedge technology that not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances the overall efficiency of ethylene production .
This transition aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and underscores the importance of sustainable manufacturing processes .
The construction of this facility is expected to create numerous jobs in the region , bolster the local economy and set a precedent for future projects aimed at sustainability within the chemical sector . It ’ s one of several groundbreaking projects that Paralloy Group is proud to be part of , spread over three continents – Europe , Asia and North America .
