Tricore ’ s technicians undergo testing training
An ambitious Teesside firm is already feeling the benefits of training technicians in an area designed to make the renewables industry more efficient and effective for the long term .
Tricore , based at Stockton ’ s Preston Farm Industrial Estate , now has seven members of staff fully qualified to operate in Damped AC ( DAC ) HV Testing after successfully undertaking training overseas .
The group of Tricore technicians travelled to Zurich , Switzerland , for a two-day course , split between practical and theory . There are only believed to be around 1,000 trained in that field across the world .
Since returning , two of Tricore ’ s technicians have already travelled to Moray West Offshore Wind Farm Project , Scotland , to carry out post-term testing on 66KV inter array subsea cables . Other projects around the globe are set to follow .
Gregg Dunford , Tricore ’ s operations director , said : “ The demand is there for this , and the clients have driven it .
“ What ’ s exciting for Tricore is that not many people have this qualification , so we have gone out and put ourselves into a great position to secure the work .”
Testing on subsea cables is needed almost at every stage , so Tricore ’ s technicians can follow up on this through the various stages .
“ Pre-testing is required when it is being manufactured , then tested when it is shipped and again during install ,” said Gregg .
“ In fact , every time a cable is moved the test is carried out , whether that is onshore or offshore .
“ If it has been left in a warehouse , the cable will be tested and we have the technicians qualified to deliver .”
As reported in Tees Business last year , Tricore was formed when Stockton ’ s Trident Technical Services and Darlington ’ s Core Systems Software joined forces .
