‘ We ’ re committed to construction –

Encouraging girls into the construction industry is a passion for safety consultancy directors Abigail Allick and Andrea Nicholls .

Since April 2021 , and in a traditionally male-dominated sector , the business partners ’ Middlesbrough-based firm , A & N Safety Consultants , has forged a reputation for providing top class health and safety support and advice .

But as A & N approaches its third birthday , Abigail and Andrea are keen to continue supporting the local community and help open more doors for girls considering careers in construction .
Andrea is vice-chair of the National Association of Women in Construction ( NAWIC ), whose aim is to “ support women in construction through their careers , celebrate and platform their accomplishments , make a lasting , positive impact on the construction industry and to inspire the next generation of women into construction-related roles .”
A & N recently supported the launch of a Future Female Leaders programme at Middlesbrough College .
Helped by local companies and backed by the Power of Women campaign , the programme aims to help young women embarking on careers in construction and related sectors with a series of events , workplace visits , talks and mentoring sessions .
And , says Andrea , a lot of the motivation behind it is to break down barriers and stereotypes .
She said : “ There is still some anxiety about working on construction sites and in the construction sector because it is still a male-dominated area .
“ We hope that by listening to women who work in the industry , by going out on construction site visits and through mentoring sessions , young women in the construction sector can gain confidence and find out more about the many career options open to them – from joinery to bricklaying and from civil engineering to project management .
“ Something like this would really have helped me when I was starting out in the industry over 10 years ago .”
Andrea ’ s fellow director Abigail said : “ We would love more local companies and

the local authorities to get involved , so please contact us .
“ We celebrate our third birthday next year and are so pleased with how well the first three have gone .
“ We can ’ t thank our clients enough for the support we ’ ve received and we ’ re committed to continuing to support the local area .’’
