New restaurant set for leisure destination
An exciting restaurant concept featuring an open kitchen and flavours from around the world is set “ to be like nothing else on offer in Middlesbrough ”.
Tarek Thoma , the man behind the successful Oven restaurant on the town ’ s Linthorpe Road , will launch Bazaar early in 2024 .
Located in Captain Cook Square , it is the latest step in Middlesbrough Council ’ s vision to turn the square into a regional leisure destination . Middlesbrough mayor Chris Cooke , pictured with Tarek Thoma , was invited inside the unit to hear more about the plans .

GRANTS HELP FIRM CUT BILLS ON NET ZERO JOURNEY

A long-established Middlesbrough firm to reduce bills on its journey to net zero .
Dormor Machine , at Cargo Fleet , has been engineering parts for vital UK projects for more than 40 years .
Now the company has used a £ 59,000 grant to install new energy-efficient lighting , a raft of solar panels on its factory roof and the introduction of a new compressor for its operations .
The firm employs 35 people from its base near the A66 .
With the help of Tees Valley Combined Authority ’ s SME Energy Efficiency Scheme ( SMEES ), which is funded through the European Regional Development Fund , Dormor was told how its lighting , machinery and energy sources could be made more efficient and cost-effective .
Established in 1979 , Dormer Machine
and Engineering specialises in large-scale precision engineering projects , working on schemes such as nuclear power projects and roller assemblies for cable laying ships to support the installation of wind turbines .
SMEES offer fully funded energy efficiency audits and expert advice as well as a capital grant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption .
Dormor Machine was helped by North- East net zero consultant Decerna .
Dormor managing director Helen Cameron-Clarke – who is the sister of Tees Components ’ MD Sharon Lane – said the grant investments have helped the firm in their push to net zero .
“ Decerna were great in initially doing the survey and the report they put together was really comprehensive . It provided us with the base to go out for quotations and say , ‘ This is what we need ’.”
Recycling firm celebrates 30 years in business
A thriving Middlesbrough recycling firm that works for leading brands including Greggs and Currys is celebrating its 30th anniversary year .
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen visited Greenbank Recycling Solutions , on Sotherby Road in Middlesbrough , to congratulate the company on its milestone .
Mr Houchen visited Greenbank ’ s offices and warehouse to learn more about its innovative recycling solutions , the company ’ s strategy for expansion and recruitment , intentions to focus on driving carbon footprint reduction for its clients and plans for sustainable local projects .
Greenbank , which currently employs 38 people , offers solutions that make waste management more efficient , from labour saving machinery to waste recycling and efficiencies .

Charity tries to ‘ break the cycle ’ of young suicide
Thousands of teenagers are receiving specialist help to try to stop more young lives being lost to suicide .
For years the North-East has had one of Britain ’ s highest suicide rates , but suicide awareness workshops are now being offered to around 4,000 Middlesbrough College students to try to “ break the cycle ”.
Students have discussed myths and stigmas around suicide at the group sessions , which also feature real stories of locals who tragically took their own lives .
The workshops have been staged by the Stockton-based Headlight Project , launched by Catherine Devereux , after her husband and Teesside businessman Russ took his own life in 2018 .

Deputy mayor meets minister over school delay
Middlesbrough ’ s deputy mayor has met a government minister to discuss ongoing delays affecting the town ’ s newest secondary school .
Cllr Philippa Storey , Middlesbrough Council ’ s executive member for education , held talks with schools minister Baroness Barran to raise issues surrounding Outwood Academy Riverside .
Although the Department for Education agreed to fund the building of the school in 2019 , work on the permanent site has taken longer than anticipated .
The DfE opened the school early in temporary accommodation , but delays have included site conditions , procurement challenges and issues identifying around viable temporary sites .
The new building is crucial to the council meeting legal obligations on providing school spaces .
