COLLEGE TO HELP SeAH WIND CENTRE CREATE DIVERSE WORKFORCE

Diversity – Hartlepool College of Further Education ’ s Helen Gott ( right ), recently appointed head of process , transports , fabrication and welding , with Lauren Calvert , the fabrication and welding lecturer , who will work closely with the SeAH Wind apprentices .

The new head of the school for engineering at Hartlepool College of Further Education wants more females to bridge the skills gap within heavy engineering by joining an exciting new scholarship programme with SeAH Wind .

SeAH Wind ’ s new partnership with the college means there are exciting opportunities available for those enrolled on a fabrication and welding course in September .
The South Korean-owned business , which is building the world ’ s largest bespoke XXXL monopile factory on Teesside , is initially looking to recruit 14 apprentices after the completion of a 12-week scholarship .
SeAH Wind aims to create a diverse workforce and Hartlepool College of Further Education ’ s Helen Gott – the recently appointed head of process , transports , fabrication and welding – wants to carry on inspiring other females to join the industry .
Helen said : “ Currently , of all the engineers around the country , only 16.5 per cent are females .
“ To promote growth of the sector and growth of diversity , it is very important that we inform and inspire current female pupils of the opportunities available within the industry .
“ Part of that backdrop is encouraging more females into these new roles into SeAH Wind , and encouraging more female apprentices to come through our curriculum with the relevant qualifications .”
Hartlepool College of Further Education annually holds a Women in Engineering event , which this year saw 25 female engineers and engineering apprentices come together to run activities for around 70 local female primary and secondary pupils .
Anyone interested in the SeAH Wind scholarship programme should email a CV and cover letter to seahscholarship @ hartlepoolfe . ac . uk .

Steel coil storage facility receives first shipments
Industry body wants backing for region ’ s ‘ greatest green asset ’
A specialist steel storage terminal that will strengthen the region ’ s manufacturing sector ’ s access to high-quality global steel supplies has welcomed its first shipments to the Port of Hartlepool .
The Hartlepool Steel Terminal , owned and operated by PD Ports , allows customers to discharge different steel products – including coil , steel plate , beams and pipes – onto the same berth , reducing both shipping and onward freight costs .
The 75,000-sq ft facility has been upgraded to securely store steel coil and can hold individual coils of up to 30 tonnes . Two 40-tonne overhead cranes also service the warehouse . Three new jobs have been created .
Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station provides a blueprint for future prosperity , security and environmental sustainability , according to the Nuclear Industry Association .
The industry body says the station , which recently turned 40 , is “ without doubt the greatest energy asset in the history of the North-East of England , and one of the greatest in British history ”.
The station employs 700 people and has produced enough power to light up every home in the Tees Valley for 200 years .
The NIA is calling on the government to recognise Hartlepool ’ s unique potential and back it with funding for advanced nuclear development for industrial decarbonisation .
Stockton Road development to include filling station
A new forecourt is set to take shape on the site of a former car valet centre in Stockton Road , Hartlepool .
SRJ Convenience has been given planning permission from Hartlepool Council to build a 24- hour roadside service , complete with a filling station , retail store and parking space for 14 cars , as well as customer toilets .
Provision will be made for two electric vehicle bays to be added at a later date . There will also be roof-mounted photovoltaics .
The site had previously been a filling station but had closed and been vandalised before becoming a car wash centre in recent years .
