One area Teesside Rigging & Lifting is heavily involved with is trying to combat the current skills shortage . Steve said : “ Nearly everyone in the engineering construction industry is aware of the massive skills shortage . With the lack of investment and proper training for improvers and apprenticeships over the last 20 years , it has put our industry on the cliff edge .
“ A lot of companies offer ‘ quick fix ’ solutions and training . However , the key is the end result . Companies must start taking on young lads and lasses and investing in them – to do this properly takes three to four years .
“ It ’ s not a quick fix , but it is the correct way to do it . This is how we train our own improvers – they undertake all the training required but they complete a full three-year improvership that allows them to gain the qualifications but also , more importantly , experience .”
The system Teesside Rigging & Lifting uses has been so effective , it also delivers
the same programmes for other companies .
Steve added : “ Without a work placement or company to take these young people on , the training becomes a pointless and expensive waste of time . The end result is key - they must be employed or offered employment and have a job to go to , to start their improverships properly at site .”
Having established itself as one of the UK ’ s primary facilities for rigging and lifting training , the company ’ s aim was then to establish itself internationally .
And with programmes having now been delivered across the world – as well as the opening of a new office in the Middle East – it ’ s fair to say there ’ s been plenty of progress on that score , with Teesside Rigging & Lifting having successfully delivered training programmes in Ghana , Morocco , Algeria , Dubai , Kuala Lumpur , Miri , Calgary and Houston .
Steve said : “ We went through the process to gain approval to run the ECITB International Training Competence in Engineering training programme .
“ The projects we have undertaken internationally have been incredibly successful . From our Teesside base , we have far-reaching partnerships across the world delivering training and personnel .
In fact , many of our clients are now employing our personnel in a dual role . “ All our personnel who are fullyqualified instructors have spent years in the field , building up expertise in their specific discipline . However , they ’ re now being utilised in a dual role , being able to deliver internationally recognised qualifications that are transferrable worldwide via the candidates ’ unique IHSP photographic passports .”
Over the next two months , there are scheduled trips to the Middle East and West Africa . And as for the future both at home and abroad , Steve is confident Teesside Rigging & Lifting will continue to reach new heights .
He said : “ We have worked very hard over the last 15 years to build Teesside Rigging & Lifting into a company our clients trust and rely on .
“ We have positioned ourselves to be a dynamic and responsive services company that can handle any size projects covering structural steelwork , rigging , fabrication and site services , and covering projects from energy from waste , new builds , shutdown support , contracting lifting and maintenance scopes .
