Architects and accountants work together to find winning formula

ith more than 35 years in the design and delivery of complex buildings , several award-winning projects to its name and a vision to “ create inspiring places that enhance lives ”, P + HS Architects already has a legacy that stands the test of time .
The brainchild of Chris Potter and Rowland Holmes-Smith , both now retired , P + HS Architects started life in 1984 . From the firm ’ s early days in a modest one-room studio , P + HS has grown into a thriving , nationally recognised practice with 80 employees and offices in Stokesley , Leeds and Newcastle .
Specialists in the design of healthcare and residential buildings throughout the UK , some of the company ’ s notable projects in our region include awardwinning cancer treatment centres for South Tees NHS Foundation Trust , the Endeavour Unit at James Cook , the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre at the Friarage Hospital and Tees Valley Hospital in Acklam , as well as residential schemes .
P + HS is currently delivering more than 1,000 new homes in Teesside , including 300-plus mixed tenure and affordable homes under construction on sites at Kirkleatham , Redcar and Brackenhoe in Middlesbrough , a further 422 units at Allen ’ s West in Eaglescliffe beginning soon and major sites further afield . The practice is also working on several specialist elderly care facilities across the North-East and Yorkshire .
Whatever the individual project , the firm ’ s architectural remit is to turn each client ’ s aspirations into reality through creative thinking and exceptional technical knowledge . This involves in-depth consultations with clients and stakeholders , developing a robust brief , preparing strategic masterplans , developing great designs for approval and working alongside contractors to deliver projects while paying close attention to technical detailing and interior design .
The practice ’ s unwavering vision and the hard work of its directors and staff has certainly paid off , not just in awardwinning work and project success , but in its continuing growth .
P + HS is proud of employing the best talent and nurturing new entrants into the architectural profession on both the design and technical side . It comes as no surprise that The Architects ’ Journal recently named P + HS as one of the UK ’ s top 100 architecture practices .
Yet despite the firm ’ s well-established roots , glowing reputation and awardwinning credentials , P + HS recognised from its inception that commissioning outside help would allow it more time and energy to concentrate on core business activities . That help came in the form of Stockton-based chartered accountancy practice Baines Jewitt , which has worked with P + HS since 1984 .
