Reasons for not getting to a golf course are endless— jobs, school, family matters, errands, commitments. The list goes on and on. But the element of time is no longer quite as big a factor. That’ s because of The Rustick Golf & Fare, which offers a 9-hole par 3 course and driving range under the lights. Work a full day and still get in an evening on the course.
As the only lighted course in the greater Kansas City area, it’ s been particularly popular in the evenings as golfers beat the 100-degree heat of July and August.“ I still think people want to get out and try something different,” says Suderman.“ Instead of just having dinner or going to a bar, you need a different level of entertainment.”
Formerly known as Twin Oaks, the par 3 Oxbow 9-hole course, founded by Jeff Burey in 1997, once drew 4,000 fans for a Skins Game featuring KU basketball coach Roy Williams, Royals Hall of Famer George Brett, and winner and former Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer.
Located just off busy Kansas Highway 10 about six miles east of Lawrence, The Rustick not only offers a nighttime par 3 course but everything else for someone wanting to learn or perfect their game— five Trackman golf simulators; 60 Trackman driving range bays, including 11 that are covered and boast state-of-the-art ball dispensers; and a large putting clock. Add a brand-spanking new clubhouse and full-scale restaurant and bar that opened August 14, and you’ ve got the full golfing package.
“ Everything you can do at The Rustick you can come in and do in an hour,” says General Manager Grant Suderman.“ You can hit all levels of play here, but we’ re definitely a gateway to the game for people who are just learning or junior golfers. At the same time, we provide a high level of technology for low handicap golfers to work on their game as well.”

The Rustick’ s 9-hole lighted course just off Highway K-10 six miles east of Lawrence.
Thanks to Suderman’ s background in agronomy learned at Kansas State, the course’ s fairways and greens match up with the best. Named The Oxbow in reference to its location along an oxbow of the Wakarusa River, the longest hole is 141 yards. In addition, Oxbow’ s lake offers water hazards that must be avoided on a couple of holes. There’ s also a starter’ s building named the Trading Post that offers snacks and drinks without returning to the restaurant. Both the course and driving range are open until 11 p. m. during the week and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
The driving range is a study in technology. Each bay has a monitor that, thanks to radar, outlines not only how far you hit a shot but also how high the shot was hit, the spin rate, and other such statistics.“ You can also play games or different courses such as Pebble Beach that are programmed,” says Suderman. Six target greens offer everything from chipping practice( and contests) to long iron accuracy.
The 11 covered bays come with a large seating area with multiple TVs and dining options, ideal for social gatherings. And for special events, there’ s additional space that can accommodate up to 120 people.
Golfers who want to see what their swing looks like have five indoor Trackman simulators that offer everything you want to know, including distance, velocity, swing rate, and lots of other data, not to mention simulation with multiple famed courses. The bays are rented on half-hour increments.
