Golf tips for any age golfer.

by Gianna Augustine, PGA

For the last 15 years my days have been filled with offering instruction to all levels of golfers, but mainly junior golfers. Golf instruction goes in phases, from teaching all facets of the game to refining the skill and then transferring the skill from practice to the course. While actually going onto the golf course can be the best form of practice and learning, a few offcourse games with a partner can better prepare all golfers, young and seasoned for future golf rounds.

This month, we’ ll look at a few fun games I’ ve played to help me prepare for tournaments when I was a junior golfer, collegiate player, then playing professionally part-time and teaching full-time. The following three games cover the major facets of the game: full-swing, chipping, and putting, with a little instruction sprinkled in to get you on your way before you hit the links this year!
Driving Range Aim Game
You can play this simple aim game on the driving range. On each shot, pick a target and hit to it. Each player is awarded a point when they properly align to the target and another point if their ball goes toward the target. The importance of this game is that the attention is on the intended target with proper aim and alignment. Even if the shot is hit poorly but is still traveling in the intended direction, the point shall still be awarded. While golfers competing against each other may have varying levels of ability or distance, aim and alignment play a key role in a golfer’ s success, making this game fun for all! I suggest playing to 20 points, changing clubs every four golf balls hit.
Towel Chipping Game
It is important to understand how momentum / length of swing affects distance to play the Towel Chipping game. Chip shot form is similar and comparable to an underhand toss motion / momentum. The distance your arm swings back and through is essentially the same arm swing you need for a chip shot!
To play the Aim Game, it is important that the player understands aim and alignment. Aim and alignment work just like train tracks or parallel lines. The clubface is the only thing looking at the specific target, and the feet should draw an imaginary line parallel to the target.
I love the Towel Chipping game because it can be played anywhere: backyards, parks, fields, or, more conventionally, the course. This game is all about distance control. You may first play this game by tossing golf balls underhand onto the towel and then once you have
