Technology, Affecting Us Now and Then May 2014 | Page 20

the idea of the world not being flat. So, one man named Christopher Columbus took up the task of finding out. The boat was a very helpful piece of technology in this endeavor. It let us explore further than we could before, across the water. It started out as a small raft type boat used for easier fishing. It was made bigger, into the canoe. Fishing was the only purpose of a boat until trading became big across nations. It was then used for transporting faster, as the boat got bigger.

Soon the boat became as big as todays ships. It was then, of course, used by Christopher Columbus to cross the ocean. He and his comrades wanted to be away from one person’s thoughts and give many for accurate strategies and laws. The United States was given that freedom and is the only one today. The Constitution was made to signify that freedom and disconnection from Europe. It is the most important piece of paper in the United States today. And even though laws change, they all obey the previous thought of freedom.

Around that time, science was big. Thomas Edison discovered electricity and tested with it. Everyone knows the story of the kite and the key, but they don’t really know the whole discovery of electricity. Edison was in his lab and working with this new found technology. He played around until a light bulb went off in his head. He made the schematic, played some more, and it was made. Many know of his invention the light bulb, but they forget what he powered it with.

He was the creator of the generator so that he could run the light. He wired his own house with the light bulbs and a big generator in the back. He showed off his new invention to all of the townspeople. They liked it and soon the streets were lined with light poles. A generating station was made to run the light at night. Edison didn’t stop there.

He kept looking for new ways to use this technology. But all of his success ended with one man. Nikola Tesla. This man worked for another who used DC (Direct Current) electricity. Tesla had the idea of AC (Alternating Current) electricity. He was fired and went to share his idea with Edison, the father of electricity. Edison thought AC was too dangerous and kicked Tesla out as well. Tesla was on his own until he decided to show off his new discovery.

Tesla went to get his idea patented with J.P. Morgan during the Monopoly. Morgan was a major investor and new to the family business, and when he decided to help Tesla, his father was disappointed in the decision. He proved his father wrong by becoming one of the three wealthiest men, after his father had passed away. One of the other wealthiest men was George Westinghouse. Westinghouse was the man who funded Edison which provided him money.

The third man in the Monopoly was John D. Rockefeller. He owned the oil company and battled the other men to be the wealthiest. When one of the men died, he inherited the money making him the richest man in history. Besides that, Morgan funded Tesla’s experiments to help AC become the major used electrical current.
