Technology, Affecting Us Now and Then May 2014 | Page 13

and philosophy. It helped us to make more creations while analyzing all of the outcomes and possibilities. Time came and went with one major technology being invented. Gunpowder was discovered and along with it came the matchlock. It was a basic gun that ignites the power and a ball came out. But soon thoughts were spread and the Earth became flat. It was the era of scientists at their best. They wanted to know, to find data that will prove or disprove the theory. They wanted to explore the unexplored. So, they built a boat, a really big boat.

Christopher Columbus started sailing, not knowing what he would find. He was surprised to find new land, a land with freedom. He went back to England and brought others with him to escape the clutches of the king. Years passed and to signify their freedom, they wrote. The Declaration of Independence was and is the most powerful piece of writing. It was one of the best made pieces of technology made, for it gave us freedom. In this new land, we built a city, Boston. We became sophisticated and wanted to learn more.

Thomas Edison changed our lives forever with his discovery on our most used technology today. He discovered what that flash in the sky was during a storm. He studied its charge and replicated it. Along with it came the light bulb after further research. He gave a group of town’s people a show after he wired his whole house with the light bulbs and a generator in his backyard.

He kept going with his research and even hired a partner whose name was Nikola Tesla. During the research, he pitched a new idea; AC (Alternating Current). Edison always used DC (Direct Current) for he thought it was safer. He forbid Tesla from using AC so Tesla ran off to do his own research. It was the battle of AC/DC and whose will provide the town with light. They fought to show which one was safer, but Tesla leaped ahead with his invention. Tesla planned to show everyone in town that AC couldn’t hurt him, so he made a coil that would flow AC into him and go to the other coil.
