The first skill you need to master is listening. Listening is really important to have a good communication because it lets you understand not only the words the other person is saying and their meaning but also how the person feels about the situation and what are his or her emotions towards the subject. Some of the things you can do to be a good listener are:

Make the speaker feel heard and understood.

Create an environment where he/she feels safe talking and expressing their emotions.

Help clarify information and avoid misunderstandings.

Focus completely on the speaker.

Avoid interrupting so that he/she knows you are interesting and paying attention.

Do not be judgmental.

Show the speaker that you are really interested in what they are saying and willing to help them.
