ST. GEORGE’S LADIES’ GUILD
report written by Dorothy Thistlethwaite
Geraldine Southam was our speaker on 24th April; she spoke about her
work as a volunteer at the Barrow Foodbank, work which has increased
over the last twelve months.
Geraldine said two words could describe the work they do: ’humbling’ and
’rewarding’. Before Geraldine’s visit to the Guild Noreen had asked her if
there was anything members could bring for the Foodbank and we are
surprised to see shampoo on the list! But thinking about it, we all take
toiletries for granted - part of everyday life. Gone is the Friday night bath
night and the bar of soap to wash our hair! No shampoo for us.
On 8th May, Elaine and Susan presented a Quiz, courtesy of Monica at the
library; our chosen subject was Barrow and like all quizzes it caused much
discussion. We all enjoyed the evening.
Our speaker on 29th May was Horace Grainger. He told us that he and
Jean were planning to visit relatives in Barnsley. Both agreed it would be a
long drive over there, so decided on the train - which turned out to be
’spot on’. They could relax and enjoy the scenery. The next trip planned is
a visit to Hull. Horace then continued with his chosen subject about the
early days of his ministry. He overcame some of the problems and went
on to make a very good ‘career’ - somehow that doesn’t seem the right
word to describe his work. It must be a 24 hour a day job which is
emotionally satisfying and worthwhile.
Finally, on a rather sad note, Marjorie Edwards, one of our members has
passed away and we want to assure her family and friends of our
thoughts and prayers.
