Tony Stuart finalist at Inland Empire

FIRST® Dean's List Award

pg. 8

Tony Stuart is top of his junior class with a 4.56 GPA, having taken all honors and dual enrollment college classes in high school and never receiving a B. Yet, on Team 4201 he is known as “The Breaker,” for his propensity to get his hands on everything and try out his ideas, sometimes with the temporary failures that lead to success.

He’s very creative with his ideas – he seems kind of wild and sporadic at times, but he really knows what he's doing, and it's awesome having him on the team and being the lead of the mechie side of things.

--Teammate

His combination of traits is a rare one – he’s responsible and takes risks, successful and willing to fail, brainy and good with his hands, a leader who’s willing to follow – and we’re very lucky to have him. He joined the team as our only freshman in our rookie season. He was on the programming team and worked on the electronics to learn how code is translated into action. His participation was part of the reason that we won the Highest Seed Rookie award. Last year, he moved to the building team, and learned how to design and build the gears and motors. This year, he is Engineering Lead, which means he coordinates among all the different groups working on the robot to ensure that none of their designs conflict.

Even as a freshman, he distinguished himself with his work ethic – always there and willing to help with a smile. He easily turns into the go-to for any task because you know he's going to do a good job.

a good job.

Tony has been instrumental in our youth outreach about FIRST and in promoting STEM career paths at school. In his freshman year, he mentored the FLL team at the Da Vinci Innovation Academy (the K-8 school located on our campus), and last year was an FLL Robot Design judge at the regional competition. He also presented about FRC at Boeing’s Take Your Child to Work day and at El Camino College’s Science and Engineering fair. This year, he founded a National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE Jr.) chapter at Da Vinci to inspire more African American students at the school to pursue STEM. He helped arrange for black engineer guest speakers from Google, SpaceX, and JPL, and organized club field trips, including the NSBE regional conference, an engineering labs tour at Loyola Marymount University, and upcoming trips to Raytheon and UCLA. Currently, African American students are under-represented on our team, and we are pleased that some of the club members have expressed interest in joining FRC next year. We fully agree with what one of his class teachers wrote on his report card:
