Before leaving the classroom, the teachers introduced the main theme of the activity and discussed the meaning of freedom. Students shared their initial ideas and considered how freedom could be understood in different historical and cultural contexts.
The teachers also explained the purpose of the interviews and reminded students to approach local residents respectfully, ask for permission before recording them and obtain consent before including identifiable individuals in their videos.
4. Lesson Procedure Stage 1. Introduction: What does freedom mean?
The activity began with a classroom discussion about the meaning of freedom. Students were asked to consider whether freedom meant the same thing to everyone and how its meaning had changed throughout history. The teacher introduced questions such as:“ What does freedom mean to you?”,“ Can freedom exist without responsibility?” and“ Why have people been willing to risk their lives to defend their freedom?”
Students shared their initial opinions and referred to examples from their own countries and historical experiences. Their responses provided a starting point for exploring how political systems, social conditions and personal experiences had influenced people ' s understanding of freedom.
