Teaching Freedom_ Three Lessons That Turn History into Meaningful Action (1) | Page 6

Particular attention was given to the historical experiences of Jerzy Popiełuszko and Hieronim Dekutowski. Students investigated their lives and discussed how their actions had reflected the challenges and political circumstances of their respective periods. They also considered the broader meaning of courage, resistance, human dignity and responsibility. The activity distinguished between documented local connections and the wider national historical context, ensuring that students ' interpretations were based on reliable evidence.
An important element of the city game involved communicating with local residents. Students prepared questions and conducted short interviews to discover how people understood freedom and how they remembered significant historical events. These conversations helped students recognise the importance of personal memories and different perspectives in shaping collective historical awareness.
The activity concluded with the creation of short video reflections in which students presented their findings and explained what freedom meant to them. By combining historical research with personal reflection, the city game helped students connect the past with contemporary democratic values and develop a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving historical memory.
