Teaching Freedom_ Three Lessons That Turn History into Meaningful Action (1) | 页面 10

The activity encouraged students to recognise that public spaces often carried historical and cultural meanings that were not immediately obvious. By researching and discussing the selected locations, they developed a deeper understanding of how local communities had preserved and communicated their historical experiences.
Stage 3. Historical Investigation: Jerzy Popiełuszko and Hieronim Dekutowski
During the historical investigation, students explored the lives and experiences of Jerzy Popiełuszko and Hieronim Dekutowski. Using the materials provided by the teacher and other reliable sources, they investigated the historical circumstances in which the two figures had lived and acted.
Students examined how their choices had reflected the political realities and challenges of their respective periods. They discussed the risks associated with resistance, the importance of personal convictions and the ways in which individuals had responded to oppression.
The groups considered questions such as:“ What motivated these individuals to act as they did?”,“ What risks did they face?”,“ How had their decisions affected other people?” and“ Why had their lives become part of historical memory?”
The teacher encouraged students to approach the subject critically and to distinguish between the documented facts of each biography and broader interpretations of courage and resistance. Students also recognised that the two figures had operated in different historical circumstances and that their experiences needed to be understood within their respective contexts.
