AROUND CAMPUS

Dance - A Joyful Balance

They clapped , jumped , swayed , and intentionally held a pose ... Our third graders ’ inaugural series of workshops through Saint David ’ s new collaboration with the National Dance Institute was a smashing success . Over the course of three days in February , the boys learned correct timing , how to match rhythm to movement , and some secrets to balancing on one leg ( hold arms out to the side ). The choreography for the dances they performed before an audience on the final day in our Otto-Bernstein Theatre was inspired by the boys themselves and guided by the poetry of Dr . Maya Angelou . This collaboration with NDI originated in our programmatic initiative to maximize the use of our school ’ s theatre and expand our performing arts program . Music Chair Jeff Moore , who had been involved with NDI for a number of years , jumped at the opportunity , reaching out to NDI ’ s director to make it happen . Each workshop session was led by two NDI teachers / choreographers and a musician , with support and oversight from Mr . Moore and Saint David ’ s Choral Director , Music Teacher Meg Myette .

Caring for Central Park

This year ’ s fifth grade pledged to care for and improve our local environment . During the spring , they worked with the Central Park Conservancy to preserve and enhance parts of Central Park that we use frequently throughout the year . Projects included preparing areas for spring growth and planting , removing invasive plants and weeds , tree care and maintenance , and restoration of park areas and habitats .
