AROUND CAMPUS
Busy Bees
While the queen ’ s away , the drones will play ... or visit Saint David ’ s boys . Our Kindergartners , Alpha Class , second and fifth graders had a sweet treat when a beekeeper led workshops in the spring . Boys learned about a bee ’ s life , observed live bees , and tasted fresh honey .
Bird Watching in Central Park
Was it science class or a bird watching expedition at Turtle Pond in Central Park ? Both ! This past spring , Saint David ’ s fifth graders joined the many birders in Manhattan ’ s largest park hoping to catch a glimpse of peak spring migration along the Atlantic Flyway . Boys used binoculars and field guides to observe both migrating and resident birds , as well as the birds ’ habitats , in order to evaluate the diversity and resilience of the ecosystem .
With the help of a Saint David ’ s parent who is an expert bird guide , the boys made notes and drawings about colorful Blue Jays and Warblers , camouflaged Sparrows , and familiar Mallards . They discussed their responsibilities as field scientists not to disturb their subjects , especially when they are resting on a long journey or building a nest . After a final quiet bird walk , boys headed back to school , attempting to “ leave no trace ” of their presence .
