ST M ATHS E R E A C O spoke about the essential ingredients that make games effective as teaching tools and what to look for when selecting games for education. He also explored some ideas around how games can become a core part of Maths lesson plans. Dr Shafia Abdul Rahman, showed participants how the use of the Bar Model can be an effective way to teach problem solving, while Dr Jason Johnson, explored the concept of Ethnomathematics, the benefits for the teaching and learning of mathematics. Teachers participated in several Ethnomathematics activities. For teachers who were tired of solo and group work strategies that were normally ineffective and wanted to change the way their students learn math, Janet Larsen Roberts, a certified Kagan instructor, engaged those teachers in learning new cooperative learning structures which they could immediately take back and implement in their classrooms. Attendees were able to view and interact with cutting edge products and services from the exhibitors who were present at the event. The exhibitors included; Mangahigh, Scholastic Middle East, Pearson Education, Explorelearing, Texthelp, Sharing Good Practice NFERENCE Whizz Education, Edx Education, Gratnells, Macmillan and Eteach. The event which was strategically divided into three streams (K-2, Primary 3-6, Secondary 7-12) allowed educators to attend sessions according to the grade level they teach, making the sessions highly specific and relevant to the attendees. Delegates were able to network over a sumptuous lunch and catered coffee breaks. The Middle East Maths Teachers Conference 2019 is scheduled to take place on February 23, 2019.
