Travel Snapshots
In recent months Washington D . C . has been in the news quite a lot because of what was taking place politically in the United States of America . In this edition of Travel Snapshots , we would like to show you the more touristic side of the city . The city is bursting with historical buildings , monuments and museums . It is a history lover ’ s paradise . This Snapshot does not even begin to capture all there is to see and do there , but we hope it will whet your appetite to plan a trip to Washington D . C . in the near future .
The Washington Monument
The monument , found on the National Mall , was built to honour George Washington , the United States ' first president . The 555-foot marble obelisk , towers over Washington , D . C . The Washington Monument is currently closed to visitors for renovation until spring 2019 .
The Pentagon
This is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defence , located in Arlington County , Virginia , across the Potomac River from Washington , D . C . It can be seen on the drive toward Arlington Cemetery .
Arlington Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is a United States military cemetery in Arlington County , Virginia , across the Potomac River from Washington , D . C . It is a sombre place to visit but it holds great significance to people of the United States of America and indeed the world .
The resting place of the late John F . Kennedy
President John F . Kennedy was assassinated on Friday , November 22 , 1963 . His grave is located on a hillside in Arlington Cemetery . It is also the resting place of other deceased members of the Kennedy family .
Changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery
At the Tomb of the Unknown Solider , you can witness the changing of the guards . The Arlington National Cemetery is open , during the day in summer months from April 1 to September 30 , the guard is changed every half hour . During the winter months , from October 1 to March 31 , the guard is changed every hour .
The White House
The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States , located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington , D . C . A visit to Washington D . C . is not complete without a trip to see the White House .
