EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES
OVERVIEW
On September 19 , 2023 , Azerbaijan launched a military offensive to seize control of Artsakh , exacerbating the already dire situation caused by the 10-month blockade ( and previous to that invasion and war in 2020 ) that had led to severe shortages of food , medicine , fuel , and electricity . This attack resulted in the tragic loss of hundreds of lives , including civilians , children , and two Teach For Armenia students . Over 100,000 people were forcibly displaced , including 30,000 children and 21,000 students . Despite prior experience with the 2020 Artsakh War , the sudden influx of displaced individuals overwhelmed existing support systems . Nevertheless , Teach For Armenia was prepared to address the emergency , mobilizing our network of Teacher-Leaders and staff to support the displaced population .
STRATEGY
Drawing on our experience from the 2020-2021 emergency response , Teach For Armenia launched a comprehensive emergency response initiative . We formed a coalition to provide wraparound support for children displaced from Artsakh , informed by research from Harvard University and international standards for education in emergencies . In collaboration with the Armenian Ministry of Education , Science , Culture , and Sports , we utilized public schools as community centers to deliver coordinated emergency services , including education , nutrition , health , and psychological support .
GOALS
The Education in Emergencies ( EiE ) program aimed to address the emotional , social , and educational needs of displaced students , support their integration into new school and community environments and facilitate their return to schooling despite relocation challenges .
