Qayl Depi Tun , or “ Step Towards Home ” in Armenian , is an annual summer program led by Teach For Armenia ’ s Alumni-Ambassadors in partnership with the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs of Armenia . The program seeks to give Armenian youth who live outside of the country the opportunity to discover their homeland , learn about its history and culture , and connect with their peers in Armenia . In 2020 , 200 people from 28 countries participated in Qayl Depi Tun , which took place online and in two sessions , from August 3-14 and August 17-28 . Twenty-six Teach For Armenia Alumni-Ambassadors took part in this year ’ s program — three as organizers and 22 in teaching roles . The initiative was led by Armine Gevorgyan and Astghik Mnatsakanyan , both of whom are from the first generation of Teacher-Leaders , Sose Ghazaryan from the third generation , as well as Samvel Vanyan , who joined us from outside of Teach For Armenia .
The program included Armenian language and history courses , virtual tours of historic and cultural sights , guest speakers , hands-on activities such as carpet weaving and ceramics , and the opportunity for peers to collaborate . Participants applied their learning in educational games and debates . Many participants started the program with no knowledge of the Armenian alphabet and ended the program being able to read and write . As a culminating activity , participants created videos about Armenian communities , identity , and culture . They also opened a website and Facebook page to unite Armenian youth around the world and promote Armenian culture .
